How Thermage CPT Works
The most abundant protein in our body, collagen lends our skin its elasticity and structural support. However, as we age, collagen becomes thinner and less elastic, resulting in wrinkles and looser, sagging skin. To improve the skin's texture and firmness, Thermage CPT uses radiofrequency technology to heat the deep, collagen-rich layers of the skin, while protecting the skin's surface with a cooling spray. The heat both tightens loose collagen fibers that have become stretched out over time and stimulates new collagen growth to make skin feel smoother, thicker, and more youthful.

Launched in 2009, the groundbreaking third generation of the Thermage skin tightening systems consistently provides a greater degree of skin tightening than the previous Thermage systems. Furthermore, the radiofrequency technology facilitates effective treatment for all skin types and tones. The advanced Thermage CPT system includes a variety of single-patient treatment tips (i.e., for the face, eyes, and various body regions), each of which has a unique heating profile for treating a specific skin area. Not only does Thermage CPT maximize results by delivering more energy per pulse, but the treatment itself involves minimal to no pain, as the vibrations with each pulse and increased cooling of the skin during the treatment were designed for patients' comfort.

What to Expect
Each time the Thermage CPT treatment tip touches your skin, you will experience brief, alternating sensations of heating and cooling. The split-second heating sensations indicate that the deep layers of the skin are reaching temperatures necessary for tightening. Throughout the treatment session, we will ask for your feedback on the level of heat to help ensure your comfort as well as maximal results. Depending on the area(s) treated, the procedure can last from 20 minutes to 1–2 hours.

Just as there is no pre-procedure preparation, no special care is required after treatment, although good skincare and regular usage of sunscreen are recommended. Most patients can immediately return to their scheduled activities post-treatment, with little to no downtime. Any temporary redness or minor swelling you may experience should resolve within 24 hours. Patients usually do not need pain medication and report that the treatments are relatively painless, although pain medication or topical anesthetic cream are provided to suit individual preferences.

Effectiveness and Results
Unlike many other cosmetic procedures for the skin, a single treatment with Thermage CPT is normally enough to produce desired results in most patients. While some immediate results may be visible, measurable skin tightening will develop during a period of 2–6 months after the treatment session, over the course of new collagen growth. Results typically last around 2 years, depending on the your skin's condition, natural aging process, and personal lifestyle and skincare practices.

Possible Side Effects
Swelling is a common side effect, with a possibility of bruising. Although some people experience mild redness, similar in appearance to a sunburn, this usually disappears within a day. Even with Thermage CPT cooling, skin damage from the heat is also possible; however, hyper- or hypo-pigmentation (an increase or decrease in skin coloration) are rare, as the radiofrequency technology targets deeper layers of the skin.
