Dilated Veins
Overview
Unsightly veins are benign vascular lesions, such as dilated blood vessels and capillaries that appear on the surface of the skin as splotches, dots, bulges, and spider shapes. They can show up in a variety of colors, ranging from red to purple to brown. Blood vessels on your face or body may be due to sun damage, smoking, heredity, hormones, acne scars, or steroid therapy.
Normal vs. dilated vein

Weakness in the walls and valves of the veins cause blood to stagnate instead of being properly circulated. Some vascular lesions are so tiny that they are not visible under normal conditions. Others, such as varicose veins on the legs, can be quite prominent. Laser and IPL treatments effectively and safely remove the apearance of unwanted blood vessels on the face, neck, and body.

What to Expect
This procedure sends very strong bursts of light onto the vein. The beam of light coagulates the blood inside the vessel, causing your body to reabsorb it in a harmless process. Laser and IPL treatments are appealing to some patients because they don't involve needles or incisions. Still, when the beam of light hits the skin, the heat sensation can may be slightly painful, like the snap of a rubber band against the skin. A cooling mechanism helps to reduce the pain.

Treatments last for 10–30 minutes, and you may notice results immediately. Patients may return to their normal activities without any significant cosmetic inconvenience.

After treatment, you may find the application of an ice pack to be soothing to the treated area. Some patients may require the application of a topical antibiotic cream or ointment. In the first few days following treatment, you should also take care to avoid abrasively scrubbing the treated area.

Effectiveness and Results
This is a quick and effective technique. Treatments produce the desired results for most individuals, including those with darker or tanned skin. It is possible that you will need additional treatments, since our body tends to re-canalize the veins. Depending on the severity of the condition, 1–5 treatments over the course of several months are generally needed to remove unwanted veins.

Over 85% of facial blood vessels can be removed in a single treatment with little or no cosmetic downtime. Depending on the results you wish to achieve, you may need a second treatment in 6–8 weeks. For optimal results, we recommend that patients avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen with SPF 30 and UVA/UVB protection.
